Evans pedestrian killed on highway
A pedestrian was killed Saturday night while crossing the intersection of North Belair and Cox roads.
A Jeep Cherokee hit 65-year-old Reamer Allmond, of the 200 block of Bohler Drive in Evans, just before 9 p.m., Columbia County Sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said.
Morris said witnesses confirmed that the driver, Denise Radford, of Evans, had a green light and that Allmond walked into the road.
No charges will be filed.
Allmond had a history of brain damage and confusion and was listed as a member of Columbia County's Project Lifesaver, Morris said. The project registers people with dementia-type disorders who tend to wander.
Driver gets prison for fatal wreck
A Harlem man was sentenced to prison Friday after a Columbia County jury convicted him on several charges from a fatal wreck in May 2007.
Brandon Christopher Newman, 27, received 22 years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, driving under the influence and reckless driving.
Newman was driving in foggy, damp conditions on Harlem-Grovetown Road early May 13 with his brother, Cameron Newman, 23, of Harlem; Mallory Jason, 19, of Martinez; and Sarah Boykin, 16, of Augusta, when he lost control of his Dodge Quad Cab truck and hit a pine tree, police said.
The wreck killed Newman's brother and Jason. Boykin was seriously injured.
The trial was Newman's second. The first, in November 2008, was declared a mistrial when the jury could not reach a unanimous decision.

SUV vandalized with paint, salt
Someone vandalized a Graniteville teen's vehicle Friday.
The 18-year-old said that between midnight and 5:35 a.m. someone poured salt on the roof and hood of her 2004 Jeep Liberty in the driveway of a Middleton Road residence in Grovetown.
A large rock was on the hood, derogatory words were sprayed on one side of the SUV and the license plate was painted over.
Woman charged with taking glasses
An Augusta woman was arrested Saturday and charged with trying to steal nearly $5,000 worth of eyeglass frames from a Martinez optometry business.
An assistant manager at Eyeglass World, 258 Bobby Jones Expressway, told police she saw Rasheda Danielle Williams, 32, leave the store about 4 p.m. with two pairs of eyeglass frames in her hand. The employee asked Williams repeatedly whether she needed help and saw her acting suspicious whenever she was approached by a store employee.
The assistant manager followed Williams outside and escorted her back inside. Asked whether she had any more stolen merchandise, she opened her purse and revealed 23 pairs of eyeglass frames, two cases for glasses, two containers of eyeglass cleaner and a cleaning kit.
Williams, of the 3000 block of Georgia Road, was charged with shoplifting. She was released from the Columbia County Detention Center on Sunday after posting a $2,600 bond, according to jail workers.
Check stolen from mailbox
Someone stole a check from and Evans woman's mailbox Friday.
The 43-year-old said she put a letter containing a $500 check into her mailbox at her Armstrong Way home Thursday and put the flag up. Two hours later, she went to retrieve the letter but it was gone and the red flag was still up. She thought the mail carrier had forgotten to put the flag down.
When she returned home three hours later, however, she found mail in her mailbox and the flag down.
