Retreat focuses on child safety

By Donnie Fetter
News Editor

Parents wishing to learn how to better protect their children and improve their academics might want to attend a retreat on Saturday at Evans Middle School.

Scheduled for 9 a.m. until noon, the study sessions included in the parent retreat include Internet responsibility, information on Evans High School, how Georgia laws apply to teens, and improving study skills.

All those courses will be held in Evans Middle's media center.

A separate study session running concurrent to the others during the entire time slotted for the parent retreat is "How Can Parents Help Their Students Pass the Math CRCT?" That session will be a hands-on course in the school's computer lab showing parents Web sites designed to prepare students for the benchmark exam.

For the first time this year, the retreat will be available to all area parents.

"We have advertised it to other schools in the past, but it's primarily been for Evans Middle parents," said school counselor Barbara Riffle.

"The topics we discuss are very important to all parents at whatever level, so we wanted to make it available to all parents."

However, Riffle said it's not available to all pupils.

"We prefer it be parents (attending), because the topics are geared to parents," she said. "When we talk about some of these Web sites, for instance, we don't want to introduce the children to some of these."

The study session on state law might also include discussions of a sexual nature, Riffle said.

Those wishing to attend the retreat are asked to respond by calling Evans Middle at (706) 863-2275. However, Riffle said, no one will be turned away if they arrive unannounced on Saturday.
