The U.S. Navy's official chorus will make a stop in Columbia County on Thursday on its spring tour.
The Navy Band's Sea Chanters will perform a variety of songs, including traditional chorus music, modern pop and rock tunes and Broadway melodies. The chorus also will sing sea chanteys, folk songs relating to the sea and nautical service.
"This should be a great performance," Columbia County Community Events Manager Stacie Adkins said. "This is the first time for the group to perform in our area, and with our military community, we should expect great support."
As of last week, Adkins said nearly 450 free tickets were distributed from the Community Events Department, which is in Building B of the county's government complex.
In case of bad weather, the concert will be held inside the library's Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center, with admittance issued on a first-come, first-served basis for patrons with tickets.
The Sea Chanters formed in 1956 in an effort to continue the tradition of singing sea chanteys. Women started joining the group in 1980.
The 22-member chorus will perform at several locations throughout the Southeast during the tour.
In addition to touring, the group often sings at the White House, the vice president's home and for other military and civilian dignitaries in Washington, D.C.
The chorus is scheduled to take the stage at the Columbia County Amphitheater at 5:30 p.m. Gates to the Evans outdoor venue open at 5 p.m.
Adkins encourages concert-goers to bring chairs or blankets to sit on. The concession stand will be open, but guests also can bring food to snack on. No alcoholic beverages are allowed.
