Two years in a row don't yet make a dynasty. But in two more years? All bets are off.
In two years, Rachael Cundey will be a seventh-grader. Her little sister, Sarah, will be a fourth-grader.
That means Rachael, the area's Scripps Spelling Bee champion for the second year in a row, could be competing against her own sister for the Columbia County honor.
Now a fifth-grader at South Columbia Elementary, Rachael this past weekend outclassed the competition, many of them older students, to again take the region title. She won last year as a fourth-grader, the youngest ever to hold the county title, and seemed to sneak up on her older competitors.
Didn't matter. She won again this year, and her little sister, a second-grader at South Columbia, is champing at the bit to join the fun.
She'll be eligible in a couple of years, and Rachael will still have a couple of years of competition ahead of her.
Dynasty, here they come.
